3-5pm Roots, Power and Identity before and now -Sharing of Pan African movement and music practices to shape the dialogue portion

Black History Month The People’s Take Over: : Liverpool: Roots, Power and our Identity

“In this gathering we’ll explore Liverpool as a place of power and the relationship this has with our power and identity; what we have done in the past to create a space for ourselves as people of the African Diaspora, and how we will use this opportunity to have the vital discussion on how we can look to the future, beyond “”BHM”” to establish our Self- and Community empowerment 12 months of the year.

Liverpool is a Power Place. It’s known for its fiery, funny, fierce, rebellious, determined, enigmatic people. It’s known for being an old community, oldest Black, oldest Chinese.. People were settled here long before the establishment of the ‘City of Liverpool’, so the people’s connection to this place goes way way back. Fighting for an end to inequality and racism will mean reconnecting to ourselves, our strength and reconnecting to the place we live out this struggle and grow. It’ll also mean looking beyond this month and to the power of Black History, roots and culture all year round.

Where: Katumba Culture Hub, John Archer Hall, 68 Upper Hill Street, L8 1YR.”

Black History Month The People’s Take Over: Roots of Community Arts

“Liverpool and the Liverpool 8 community played a critical role in the development of “”Community Arts”” as resistance to the racism prevalent in the 60’s and 70’s. Harnessing the power and creativity of pan-African cultural arts, it was response to the State practice of ‘exclusion or assimilation’ of Black and Brown communities. But the roots and routes of this story go way back to the foundations of contemporary racism and the mechanisms that established it in our society today.

Come listen, learn and have your say
