We love that so many people get in touch to see how they can get involved with Katumba! Here’s our guide to joining in. We welcome all levels of experience and age!

Join Our Band

As a band, Katumba is out and all about drumming our hearts out – ALL the time!

When people see us play there is an abundance of fun, joy and energy alongside all that wonderful noise, and as a result a huge number of you get in touch to see how you can get involved.

And we love to hear from you all!

As a community band with our own venue and programme of community wellbeing, music and percussion based activities, that is EXACTLY why we are here!

To reach people through our inclusive arts activities, and welcome you with open arms into our diverse community.

We treasure the diversity which every individual person contributes to our Katumba family, welcoming all levels of experience, from complete beginner to seasoned performer.

So you are absolutely welcome to join us.

Here’s how!

1.  Join us for a Taster Workshop

Who is this for? Everyone who wants to have a go!

Including people who have never played a drum before. You don’t need any musical, dance or performance experience to attend a taster session.

These workshops range from adults-only, to family and kids-only sessions.

Come see what the Katumba Drumming & Movement Buzz is about! Meet the founders, drum alongside some our our band members, learn the Katumba beats and moves and have a great time!

No experience needed, come try the basics of what we offer: we’ll take you on a journey of body percussion, drumming and some movement to get your body ready to wear our drums!

Expect to feel uplifted, inspired, full of energy and wanting more!

Don’t see any current upcoming Taster Sessions? Then join our mailing list below and you’ll hear about all our upcoming activities straight away!

2. Beginners BEAT IT Sessions

Once you’ve got the Katumba bug from a taster session, you can choose to join us for our BEAT IT Sessions – joyful and uplifting drumming sessions every Wednesday

A safe, comfortable place where there is no pressure on learning repertoire, choreography, or polishing for a large set for performances. Experience the different Katumba rhythms (a fusion of world styles from Brazil through Africa, passing through the UK), and our unique methodology in a fun, engaging, and inclusive way.

The BEAT IT Sessions also include the odd glittery community performances for those who desire, and all our other fun Katumba activities as well (exchange trips, band socials, guest facilitators, etc…)

We would love to be able to offer a space to everyone but as spaces are limited we are giving priority to those who are from the following demographics:

POC/ Queer/ Refugee/Asylum Seeker/ Immigrant/ Student/ Young Adult.

3. Wanna get serious? Join our progression route!

Once you’ve attended our Beat It Beginners Sessions, you can choose between staying on the relaxed wellbeing path OR join our progression route!

Our stimulating USP is our blend of pro gigs where progression band perform at a range of exciting events from festivals to corporate gigs to high profile events such as Eurovision and Carnival!

Once you join us for our taster sessions and BEAT IT Sessions – you will learn more about the progression route!

So let’s get your Katumba drumming journey started!

Many of our drummers start with a taster session, move into regular BEAT IT Sessions and then end up in our performing band.

So just go for it, get in touch in one of the above ways, and together we will work out the engagement level that will work for you, and take it from there!

All drumming equipment (drum, sticks, etc) is provided for the first few months whilst you find your feet, and you don’t need to buy a drum – unless you want to!

We cannot wait to hear from you.

With love, the Katumba team.
